games tester answers:

I’m a former GM of an online game and a former Game tester. Basically like any other job you apply for it. Sony Playstation, Sony Online, Midway games Blizzard has information on the Career section of thier respected website on how to apply for the position. Most position are also posted on Monster.com, Gamejobs.com and yahoohotjobs.
I duuno however whats the requirement if your are in another country some game testing countries may require you to have a degree
If your still a student you may still get the position. I think certain qualifications is that your over 18. I had workmates who were still going to school.
Some game tester jobs are applied through certain recruitment and employment centers.
But REMEMBER not just because this is the funnest job in the world means you can act like a kid and goof off
Ive seen people released from being testers for being unruly and immature and unprofessional while at the game testing workplace. The managers even though they work in a Gaming industry take thier responsibilities seriously.

Donna asks…

How do I become a Video Game tester?

I am 17 and live near Hershey Pa. I searched on Yahoo hotjobs but the results looked like scams.(wanted me to pay money) I really want to do this. Are there different ways to be a tester? I need money for college, so only answer if you know a surefire way i can become one.
i know that it is boring but its cool and can anyone give me a big list of companies that i can search for. like atari and bungee ect.?

games tester answers:

First of all, you’ll need to be at least 18 & have a High School diploma (or a GED) before you can even get your foot in the door.

Second, you’ll want to search for a Quality Assurance (the technical name for a game tester) position… Or even intern positions, if you want to get deeper into the industry. Ideally, check out http://www.gamejobs.com here as most of the open industry positions are posted here. Otherwise, check company websites in the corporate area (it’s usually a small link on the site, look hard for it).

Atari ( http://www.atari.com ) doesn’t post job listings on their website, but Bungie ( http://www.bungie.net ) post job listings publicly on their front page.

Third, you’ll most likely want to get yourself to California where the majority of game studios are located… Or look at a company that you’re interested & try moving there. Just be aware that most companies will only hire people who live nearby as they don’t give anybody in the QA department a relocation allowance.

Fourth… Be prepared to have your life sucked from you! Quality Assurance can be a very demanding job! Expect to spend up to 80 hours a week at your desk, especially during “crunch time” (near release dates) where you may be practically living at your desk.

Finally, Don’t expect a long-term career here… Most entry-level QA testing may only be for 3 months. Unless you can impress your superiors, you may be out the door after that.

Hope that helps you out… Although you’ll more likely get depressed for the lack of QA positions at the moment. Just keep on searching periodically & you’ll likely find something!

Best of Luck!

Steven asks…

If I want to become a video game designer, do I have to have to have good art skills?

I’m not artistic, but I want to become a video game designer. Is there a position in that field that doesn’t need art skills? I know about video game testers, but I’m talking about design.

Would it come in handy to take art classes? What classes should I take in high school?

Thanks!

games tester answers:

Maybe you can try programming because most of the game design companies requires a programmer. Or you can also be a scriptwriter or an interface designer for a game. Good luck

Sandy asks…

What education is needed to be a games tester (Quality Assurance)?

Can anyone provide information on what it takes to work in quality assurance for a games company? I’ve looked at job adverts but they are so vague, or list jargon that you cant understand.

I’ve tried to look for colleges/universities that would teach it, but I cant find any either. Please help!
Yes I am in the UK.

games tester answers:

(i hope you’re in the UK otherwise this may not mean much)

it’s probably best to get a BTEC National Diploma in IT Practitioners, and go on to specialize in Computer Gaming at university.

Just googled it and here’s what came up:

Hope this helps :)
