The Gamer’s Resume-The Most Important Marketing Tool

Article by Lou Garrett

Getting a job in game testing or any game position requires the same amount of work and the same application process as any job on the market. Hence, there is an absolute need for a resume. Secondly, you must remember that employers only look at the standard resume for about 8 seconds before moving on to the next applicant, so it must be good and eye catching.

There are some basics to preparing a valuable resume that will get you results. If you research and draft a resume using the important basic points, you will find you greatly increase your chances of landing that game job you’ve simply dreamed of.

As owner of a game employment site, I see a lot of resumes. I have also been involved in Human Resources for many years and I know what employers look for when they are choosing applicants to interview. Below are some simple steps to follow as well as the things you shouldn’t do when drafting your resume.

1. Start with a good layout. You can find sample resumes. There are so many resume firms out there, too many to count. Just do a search for resume samples and you can get the idea of what a good resume looks like and what the “meat” of the resume is.2. Once you’ve worked out what template you’re going to use, you now need the most important information to be placed within it. Start by doing “keyword” research online. You can look at job sites to see what sort of key words are most commonly used for the positions you’ve held over the years.3. You only need to go back 10 years on your resume. Try to keep it to the point displaying the key points to the jobs you’ve held. Try your best to keep the resume to one page. It ‘s just easier for an employer to look at one page and quickly be able to see what you have to offer.4. Prepare an objective that explains what you are bringing to the table if hired. Don’t solely concentrate on what you want. This job is not just about you, it’s about what the employer needs to fill the position.5. Stay away from listing any High School diploma, that is simply not necessary. It is something that is covered in the application process if you’re accepted to formally apply for the job. Listing the date of graduation from high school only shows your age. Even though employers are not supposed to discriminate based on age, it does happen.6. Write the resume from a 3rd person viewpoint. What would someone write if they met you and you hired them to write your resume? That is how you need to think about it.7. Never list any kind of personal information on a resume (besides your name & a contact number or email). You can go as far as your address but that is up to you. If you’re planning on posting your resume, I suggest setting up a new email account specifically for the resume that will be posted. When resumes are posted, they are fair game and you will find you get an enormous amount of spam after you post a resume.

A well written resume clearly displays your skills, abilities, and goals. It is written smoothly from start to finish. It is concise and to the point.

So get to work on your resume and make the gaming job of your dreams a reality.
