Your Questions About Game Testing Jobs Online

Mary asks…

game testing jobs online?

Hi I’m 16 and I want to test video games. I have been searching everywhere and I cant find a website that actually sends you games and pay you. Does anybody have any good sites they know?

games tester answers:

There is no such “job” for people your age AND online. When a video game developer does a beta test, those individuals are NOT paid. If you want that kind of job and get paid, you need to go to college first.

Charles asks…

What online programs get you a game testing job without experience, or having to be 18?

I am searching this for my son, he dosen’t have any experence and he is under 18.

games tester answers:

If he is looking for a job Game Testing for money he is going to need to be 18. Labor laws prohibit people under the age of 18 from working the kind of hours required by a video game tester.

If he is looking for a job beta testing games for free, signing up for different closed betas would be beneficial and playing a lot of games on a PC. Usually these beta testing positions are mostly for MMORPG’s or FPS that require a large number of people for online play.

Once he turns 18 then I would look on monster.com for a temp agency that is hiring for video game testers. This will allow him to get into a position with no experience.

For programs to know if you want a head start, I would look into bug tracking software such as Filemaker Pro or Bugzilla which is free. Many companies use programs like this for writing and entering bugs into a database that is easily accessible to developers and publishers.

Sandy asks…

Where can I, as a teen, get a job testing games online?

I have read about kids getting paid to do that, with no experience and I want to get in. How do I contact these people? How do I submit a form? What are some companies that do that? I don’t want to pay a website to find them for me. I want to make money!

In my opinion, Stay as home game testing shoudl be considered an Urban Legend. Winning the lottery would be easier than finding this as real employment. If it was real, what percentage of the US or world population would like this as a job or career? 40% or more? How many billion people is that…

With that said..
Here is what I know.

If you are younger than 14, hiring minor laws will keep you working for anyone but family and friends.

If you are under 18, only the developers and publishers that do NOT require a NDA (Non-disclosure Agreement) will consider you.

Never pay for a subscription to find a job. They are usually scams. To see if they are…
Email them and see how long takes them to respond to a specific question.
Make sure you get 2-3 phone numbers of people who have been with them for 6 months or more
and call them to see if they think it was worth it. Ask these people 2-3 specific questions about what they got for the money, how helpful was the staff, what jobs they applied for etc…

The only Game testing from home I know of consists of playing games where the game currency can be converted into real currency like http://www.anno1777.com/index.php?i=7849…
I have never tried it but why would a company have to pay you to play their game.
I bet they hope for you to pay for items more than the currency you make… Like gambling casinos.

You can also seek beta testing gigs where you get a copy of the software or promotional items you can sell on ebay. Just use Google and sign up for the beta programs.

There are also usability studies… The most famous is here http://www.microsoft.com/playtest/defaul… Again, they may pay you or give you something,
you usually have to travel to where they are.

Sandra asks…

How can i find a video game tester job and how can i get games sent to me to test?

I am 16 and i am an experienced gamer. I was reading online about video game testing and was wanting to get a job. The thing is i live in a small town (Bowling Green,MO) away from major cities that would have the jobs. I have tried to get a job here but the economy is bad and no one will hire me. Any tips on how to get a video game testing job and how to get the games sent to me?

Carol asks…

Where can I get a job testing video games online?

games tester answers:

You’ll either have to get offered a position by a video game company or register for one of the game testing sites (for a fee) that they take their jobs to like this:

http://tinyurl.com/MyGameTestingJob

The site above is the one I use, I made about $3500 in the first 3 months (September – November 2009). Late fall is a huge testing season as they get ready for the holidays.

Otherwise, you can always get in on open betas, but those aren’t really “jobs”. You won’t get paid a salary, but you might get prizes for being a good tester (finding a lot of bugs, accurate reporting, etc.). Good luck!
